As America is aware, in 2004 at the conclusion of the historic landmark seven-week Superior Court jury trial, the jury found justice under the law for Marc Bluestone in his Shane Case which established veterinarian malpractice. For the first time in our nation’s history, a “special and unique value” had been assigned with financial compensation for the bond and commitment between a man and his animal…Marc and his beloved dog Shane. The significance of a relationship between man and animal was given the monetary value above a piece of property (example: worth $10). Rather than the typical value (i.e. actual cost to replace the animal), this PRECEDENT-SETTING CASE assigned a "special and unique value" totaling $39,000 to compensate for the malpractice and wrongdoing that had resulted in Shane's death in 1999, which the jury deemed as an irreplaceable loss.
This decision, at the time, marked the highest monetary value awarded between man and animal. In total, Marc had personally spent $500,000 towards the total litigation that ultimately concluded at the end of 2005. After the trial, the defendants filed and then dropped their appeal in 2005.
